If there is one place on Earth that I absolutely love to visit, it's the Southwestern portion of the United States. In particular, I have a deep connection with New Mexico. Despite never having lived in the state myself, I have a deep rooted family history that runs through the region. Something about the adobe buildings, the ancient ruins, and the desert landscape really entices me. It's almost as much a home to me as the Colorado Rockies are. Not to mention, I have a great love--just like Frank--for classic nineteen fifties and sixties western films and television set in this region.
Therefore, it should be no surprise that my Wicked Waffle series will often take on a slightly "western" slant at times.
I grew up on bedtime stories about desert farming, Navajo culture, real life cowboys, and skin walkers. These were told to me by my father in the late evening hours as I drifted off to sleep. Throughout my life, I've visited New Mexico on various occasions for family gatherings and vacation both. Since being married, my husband and I have trekked there for a week away. The highlight of our most recent trip was our visit to the Alcove House in the Bandeleir National Monument--the very location that inspired this particular story.
