So without further ado, today's topic is:
What are your favorite genres to write? (Or what would you write if you wrote outside your normal genre?)
It is easy to place a finger on my favorite genre of fiction to write, and that is cozy mysteries. So far, I've only written books in the Diner of the Dead series--which is a culinary series with a slight paranormal twist.
However, I adore reading so many different kinds of cozy mysteries and would love to write in any different cozy mystery sub-genre, be it domestics, crafts, gardening, pets/animals, or even maybe straight paranormal.
Additionally, I think there are many exciting ideas that haven't been done as much, or done at all, that could make for some very interesting cozy mystery stories.
The only issue, when you're venturing into new or uncharted territory, is that the reader (you) may not like the new or different idea. As readers, we're comfortable with what we know, and we know what we like. And don't worry, I plan on writing many more books in the Diner of the Dead series!
Cozies are my niche, and I adore them. I'm not sure I'll ever branch out from the genre--at least not very far. It may be fun to do a little light genre mixing here and there, but you can rest assured that when you see a new book from me, it is a 90% chance that it will be a cozy mystery!
However, what if I DID ever branch out from writing cozies? What if I was offered the chance to write something completely different--even if it were under a pen name?
Well, in that case, I think my first choice would be to write a pulp noir style mystery. People always say to "write what you know" and I always say "write what you read." I mainly read cozies and noir crime novels, so that's what I would want to write as well.
I think it could be fun to write something with a little hint of grit and darkness to it. I enjoy a good strong femme fatale contrasted by a moody PI.
Additionally, I'm not sure I would have the proper expertise for it, but it could be fun to also try my hand at a science fiction story one day. If I ever wrote a different genre, what would you like to see? Or what type of cozy mystery would you like to see?
